So in yesterday's monthly meeting, EI indicated that work wants to have some DBA skills in house! Unreal.

I'm going to do some reasearch on the whole DBA certification thing, and then see how that goes. I am going to get the pricing for the Oracle DBA courses, and see if it's a goer. I'm hoping so at the moment, cause i'd love to do something different. At least with DBA skills I could be moving across projects, which would at least allow some variety. I could also use it on the project that i've been working on for the past 3 years, which is great.

Busy...

I had a busy night after work last night.

I'm still getting that crook feeling when I get the train - i'm not too sure if it was the salami sandwich i had for (late) lunch, or it's because i'm reading my management text book on the train. I stopped reading, and looked out the window, and started to feel a bit better.

Anyway, I got home - Rach went to bed. Jude and I had a little play before he went to bed (7:30), then I got busy cleaning up the house. Folded the massive pile of washing, put another 2 loads on, dried and folded another load. Did all the dishes, ironed my shirts for work, cleaned up the lounge, threw out some broken cd cases.

Phew - after that, I read chapter 12 of the management book (all about HR), which was quite interesting - talked about interviewing techniques. Crashed at 11:00, and got up bright as a button at 6:30...

hmmm...

it appears as though i've been a pretty bad husband.

Why is it always a big suprise when things build up and i get blasted? I thought we agreed not to let little things build up.

Anyway, i'll be tackling as best as I can when I get home tonight. Not happy jan.

is finally installed and running.

note to anyone out there who might want to run it - Use a machine more powerful than 166 mhz for Fedora. It's as slow as a dog - It took something like 40 minutes to re-boot. bugger.

Anyway, we got it all going, not a problem at all. It looks really really nice too. Very impressive. I think I might learn how to php, so I can start jiggering with it. I've also got to get some customisations from Benny.

We had a big weekend - lots of things to do..

Saturday: We went to Mike and Kylie's place for Renee's 21st. It was a bit of fun - meeting Ruby and Paula up at the Emerald pub.

We left fairly early, having Jude with us - he was getting a bit cranky. We thought we would call Ruby and Paula (they left just before us), and Ruby had been pulled over by a booze bus - he blew just over .05 - so they took him into the bus. About an hour later, he emerged with a .00 reading. :) Lucky fella.

Sunday: Rest day - we took it pretty easy - Jude went to nanny's while Rach and I went out and got some food. Unfortunately Rach wasnt happy about not being invited (again) to dinner at her parents house. hmmm...

Monday:
Stayed at home watching the footy - and playing around with the computer that Rach got from her parents place. It's pretty dodgy - P1/166 with 64 meg memory. Yeah baby! I spent most of the day putting Fedora Core 3 onto it. I'm very impressed with their installation program - looks very nice. I'm considering putting it on a machine here at work.

Guyman called too - haven't heard from him for quite a while. His parents sold their place ($1.2 million dollars, thanks very much!), but he's having problems with his tenants at his new house. I think we should go over there with the baseball bats. yeah.

I had a spanking 174 to 134 point win over Eugene's team this weekend. Sensational 5-0 start to the season so far.

What a day

I can't believe how hardcore micromanaging someone is.

I've been given responsibility for a new software, looked after by a guy who has no idea about quality of work. And it's frustrating. The client is screaming blue murder, something that has been released a month ago is still going back and forwards - with small changes needed, and then there is something else.

Oh well. Now I'm writing a document to make sure that the build process is followed religiously, so that this cannot happen. It takes just a little bit more time, but the client is happy with longer timings if they dont have to send it back 3 times for it to be right.

I've also been dealing with bugs on my own turf, trying to justify the 50 odd hours i've spent so far this month. I've managed to put together a 4 page report.

Anyway, Rach is heading in for lunch, so that will break the day up a little! :)

Stupid..

I've got some strange habits...

which are from things that I was told when I was little. I'm sure we all have these little chestnuts, it's just strange to realise years and years later that they are from things your parents told you...

Until recently, I couldn't ever wash my hair with my eyes open. Yes, I'm a freak. I used to squeeze my eyes shut really really hard.. (which totally defeats the purpose of having eyelashes!). I think this comes from when I used to have baths, and I'd have to close my eyes when mum was washing my hair (with 'No More Tears', the same as what I use on my son now!)

I also used to shower without getting my head wet at all (I suspect my parents had a phobia about me going to get with wet hair!), so I'd crane my neck out of the water and shower. No wonder my back is so completely rooted. I once got in trouble when I was at camp - I had a shower (no wet hair style), came out with dry hair - so they assumed I hadn't showered. I just went back in, wet the hair, and came back out. duh.

From this, I didn't really wash my face properly with soap until recently (last few years). I just had no idea that you would do this. Yes, I'm freaky. Thank god for metrosexuals who taught me about exfoliating and cleansing/toning.

I learnt to shave by watching people on the telly. Strange stuff. I'm still learning (thanks QESG).

Anyway, enough for today..

Argh..

Railpage is down. Frustrating. Oh well, I guess I'd better do some work. I think I might bring across more of my old journal entries from lj today too.

I felt terrible when I got the train home last night - chucking hot flushes, being stuck in a super busy train. Not good. The worst thing was that I started feeling crook this morning on the train too. Can you develop motion sickness? I spent 10 days on a boat a month ago, and didn't feel crook from the motion at all. Maybe I need to eat more, or eat less.. or something?

Songs for Silverman

I just got a hold of the latest Ben Folds album - Songs for Silverman. So far, very cool, I will review in more depth after a couple of listens. It got glowing reviews everwhere I've read about it, so I've got high hopes.

Nothing much happening at work this week, another week of farting about with Documentum and trying to get to the bottom of this workflow problem.

The weekend

I had a super weekend - doing pretty much nothing at all!

Rach was busy setting up her ebay store, so Jude and I hung out most of the weekend - and Rach's mum looked after Jude on Saturday night which was great.

They are also going to get us a bed for the new baby too. Aparently, they bought Rach's brother a baby seat so they could take the baby home - they also bought them; a bed, a matress, a stroller, and a bunch of other stuff.. Thankfully Rach's Dad saw how much stuff they bought for them, and thought that it might be good to buy us a bed. You rock Daz!

Next month will be washing machine and tv buying time. I really enjoy shopping for cool stuff like that, so I'll be hanging out for the next couple of weeks..

Hawthorn had a super win on saturday afternoon, I'm just spewing I wasn't there to see it. I think my BTC team did really well this weekend - even with Justin Murphy withdrawing late, that probably helped me in the end. Cam Bruce hurting his AC in the first 2 minutes of the Melb v St Kilda game couldnt have hurt my chances either. I'm just dirty I didnt put Scott Burns in - he had a game high 27 posessions. Ah well.

The little baby

Rach, Jude and I went to see the little baby. So very tiny. She was 7lb 3oz, which is pretty small. (Jude was 8lb 1oz.) I still cant believe how small they are. I cant help but compare to Jude, but there's not really any other reference for me.

Bill seems pretty happy, and I'm sure Dot is happy to have the baby out! :)

Other than that, we nearly got killed by a crazy taxi driver on the way home. Super stuff that.

Another little one..

has arrived - my Brother in law and his girlfriend had a little girl last night. We got the call about 10:40, and Bill was a bit light on details (which I can understand!), which is great.

Rach and I have to go to Frankston hospital on Saturday for our ante-natal checkup, so we will probably end up visiting them when we go in.

There goes the neighbourhood...

My brother in law and his girlfriend are having a baby. I just got the call that her water has broken, so I imagine that she's gone to hospital. I saw her last night when I was walking home from the train station, and said hello.

I don't know if they are going to know what's hit them! Oh well, what can you do eh?

Job

I didnt get the job metioned here. Unfortunately they cannot give me a permenant position, only a 3 month contract - it's not the right time for me to be taking a contract, with another baby due in 10 weeks.

Buggery. I think I might just go and start studying for Solaris admin and Oracle DBA anyway. I think it's a few hundred dollars to sit the exams, and a few hundred for the books to do the study. Easy.

Aparently I am going to be going out to big T to help out with some other Documentum migration projects. Super stuff. Not.

Time to start getting the resume fired up and submitted to online job sites.

Weekend..

Was good - We didnt go to the footy, and the Hawks got rolled by 2 points.

I got a haircut! yay. Saturday was pretty cruisy, we ended up going over to Reuben's place, and hanging out and getting some food. Jude went a bit crazy, so we left earlier than we would have liked, but what can you do? Nothing much on telly Sat night, except footy - and the royal wedding. booooring.

Sunday was bust, 35 degrees when we were trying to get organised to go to the footy - and then Jude went and pulled a can of creamy soda out of the cupboard - which proceeded to explode! Not just the leaking can type of thing, but seriously explode! The top of the can was ripped open from the force! Anyway, the cleanup took about an hour, as there was literally creamy soda everywhere! Every horizontal and vertical surface in the kitchen was hit - including the roof!

We just chilled out after that - Jude has a 'timeout', I called guyman and amol to let them know we werent coming down - and I just spent more time reading my Reasoning book - which I've now finished.

Spoke to guyman last night - we are going to the footy on Sunday - with Rach, Jude, Amol and Poonam too! :)

Went and saw The Life Aquatic with Steve Zissou - Fantastic film. Go and see it. I did a brief review here.

Not terribly much else happening really. I was told I might be going out on site. Funky!

What a crappy day

The deadlines for the PVR are fast approaching, but it doesn't stop support calls flooding through to me.

I've probably managed to get about 2 hours of useful work done, and most of that was between 8:30 and 10 this morning. Oh well, the joys of support.

Aparently there are big changes, but they were promised to me about 9 months ago. I will wait and see.

I have managed to spend pretty much the whole of yesterday moving stuff from my old blog to the new one - the main problem with that being that I'm actually at work, where the pay me to do their work, not dick around with my blog. Oh well, what can you do eh?

Indonesia

What is that deal with that?

Australia is getting stitched up by the Indonesians.

We help them out with $1 billion. That's $1,000,000,000. Dollars that could be going towards the people here in Australia. Money that could be used to help single parents not have to go to work, as touted here.

They then go and let the mastermind behind the Bali bombings Abu Bakar Bashir off with what amounts to a slap on the wrist - this is someone who effectively has the blood of 88 Australians, and 202 people on his hands.

But the Indonesians are more than happy to give the death sentence to Schapelle Corby, for allegedly bringing in a large amount of marijuana into the country. There are holes in that case that you could drive a truck through, but it still seems to be progressing as the Indonesians want.
